Hi,
I'm just trying out DubScript for carrying around my screenplays with me to work on. The screenshots depict a side action menu where you can choose to open scripts from Google Drive. I can't for the life of me find that, however. When I go to open a script, Dubscript only shows me my local file listing. I do have the Drive app installed, if that matters.
Thanks for the app, it's a good idea and I'm looking forward to using it.
Where that side drawer thing is...
Hey thanks for writing...
The side action menu you're describing is part of the new "storage access framework" feature (see it described here-- it's feature #6), which was added for Kitkat, aka Android 4.4. Unfortunately, unlike many new additions to Android that have "legacy" compatibility, the side drawer is built-in only for 4.4 (and higher, presumably).
If you happen to have an older version of Android and are unable to upgrade, no problem, a custom-written file-picker is built into DubScript. As you observed, this will work with files that are on your actual device. However, you can still import screenplays from Drive by using the Drive app itself to select a file ending in ".fountain", ".txt", ".fdx" etc. It should then load into DubScript. Similarly, you can choose attachments in Gmail that you've sent to yourself, and many other programs should work as well.
For saving back to Drive, you can use DubScript's share button, on Kitkat, but also on earlier versions of Android.
Hope this helps, thanks for writing, and enjoy!
Sorry, I didn't get a
Sorry, I didn't get a notification about your reply.
Thanks for the thorough clarification and workaround!
As a side note, this website is almost unbearably slow -- have you thought about an alternative, low-maintenance way of handling support and discussions? Google Groups, for example?
Thanks!
Thanks for the feedback-- just out of curiosity, where (roughly) are you located? I'm in the same general part of the US as the server and I get a reasonably quick response time, but maybe there's a routing problem internationally or something?
That said, Google Groups was used for alpha testing, so maybe it can be used for the beta too... I'll look into that.
Thanks again!
New England
Again, missed your reply because there aren't notifications, sorry about that. I'm in the Portsmouth, NH area, so northern New England. Response time today seems faster. The other times I posted it was very slow, though.
Ah, okay...
From what I can tell I think it may have been a networking issue or something-- it seems to be fairly speedy here. Let me know if you have another slowdown though.
I think there's a way to have the site notify you if there's an update.. I'll look into that too. Thanks again for the feedback!
